Artist Statement
I create watercolor paintings and ink drawings that explore landscapes shaped by atmosphere, memory, and restraint. Influenced by Impressionism and modern approaches to abstraction, my work imagines the natural world as it might exist with little or no human presence. These scenes feel familiar yet intentionally omit roads, towers, contrails, and other markers of development, creating spaces for stillness and contemplation.
Rather than depicting specific locations, the paintings emerge through an intuitive process. I begin with the sky—often clouds—which gradually transform into mountains, mesas, or distant horizons. The plains, Rocky Mountains, and western slopes of Colorado inform the work, but the landscapes remain interpretive rather than documentary.
I intentionally work on a small scale, compressing expansive environments onto intimate surfaces. This constraint encourages close looking and slow engagement, allowing details to reveal themselves over time. Through these paintings, I aim to offer moments of quiet attention—landscapes that exist somewhere between observation and imagination, removed from contemporary noise yet emotionally resonant.
